5 Things I Wish I Knew About Resin When I Started (5 Years Later)

When I first began working with resin, I thought mastering it would be quick and straightforward. Five years later, I’ve learned that resin has its own personality, one that requires patience, testing, and a lot of trial and error. And even now, I’m still learning, experimenting with new resins, and working with different resin mediums as this craft continues to evolve.

If you’re new to resin (or even a few years in), these are the lessons I wish someone had told me from day one.

1. Resin Overheats Very Fast — and Some Brands Heat Faster Than Others

Resin creates heat as it cures (this is called an exothermic reaction). What I didn’t realize early on is just how quickly that heat can build up; especially when working with deep pours or larger volumes.

Some resin brands are formulated to cure faster, which means they can overheat more easily. Overheating can cause:

  • Warping or cracking

  • Bubbles that appear out of nowhere

  • Yellowing or cloudiness

  • Even melted molds in extreme cases

Knowing your resin’s pour depth limits and cure speed is essential to avoiding ruined pieces.

2. Not All Resin Dries Fast — and Mixing Matters More Than You Think

One of the biggest misconceptions is that resin “just dries on its own.” In reality, curing time varies widely depending on the resin type, temperature, and how well it’s mixed.

If resin isn’t mixed thoroughly; scraping the sides and bottom of the cup, it may never fully cure. This can leave pieces:

  • Sticky or tacky

  • Soft in certain areas

  • Permanently uncured

Rushing this step was one of my earliest (and messiest) mistakes. Proper mixing is non-negotiable.

3. Resin Will Yellow Over Time — but Some Resins Age Better Than Others

No resin is completely immune to yellowing. Exposure to UV light, heat, and time all play a role. What I learned over time is that the rate of yellowing varies greatly by brand and formula.

Higher-quality resins often include UV inhibitors that slow the process, making them better for long-term keepsakes and display pieces. Choosing the right resin matters even more when you’re creating pieces meant to last for years.

4. Not Everything Belongs in Resin

Resin is extremely reactive, and not all materials behave well once encapsulated. Some items can:

  • Release moisture

  • Change color

  • Create bubbles or separation

  • Prevent proper curing

Organic materials, untreated metals, and certain plastics can react unpredictably. Over time, I learned to test everything before using it in a final piece, especially for customer orders.

5. Cheap Resin Isn’t Always Bad — and Expensive Resin Isn’t Always Good

This lesson surprised me the most. Price doesn’t automatically determine quality. Some affordable resins perform beautifully, while some expensive ones don’t meet expectations for certain projects.

What truly matters is:

  • How the resin behaves in your environment

  • How it cures for your specific use

  • How it holds up over time

Testing different brands helped me find what works best for my process and my business. There is no universal “best resin” only the best resin for you.
